With its lakes, wetlands and marshy fields, Gnaviyani Atoll is perhaps the most unique atolls in Maldives. The atoll, known commonly as Fuvahmulah, comprises a single detached island, and is the second largest administrative division of the country after capital Male. It is also one of the few atolls in the Maldives where the inhabitants speak an accent of Dhivehi language that is drastically different from that used in mainstream communication. The atoll, which stretches up to five kilometres in length and 1.2 kilometres in width, has many distinct characteristics such as the beach at the northern end of the island which contain naturally-occurring pebble-like sand particles.
